Pastoral Council

The Formation of the Council

St. Bede has a dynamic and strong foundation, and a new effort is underway to ensure the parish continues to be a growing, vital and vibrant presence in Pittsburgh’s East End. Part of this new effort is the establishment of the St. Bede Parish Pastoral Council.

The St. Bede Parish Pastoral Council was formed in the spring of 2009 through a discernment process that invited all parishioners to consider participation in the council.  In addition to bulletin and church announcements, each parish household was contacted by phone to ensure that the entire parish was personally invited to participate in the process of forming a Parish Pastoral Council.

Interested parishioners notified Fr. Bryce of their desire to become members of the Parish Pastoral Council.  Fr. Bryce accepted all parishioners who expressed this desire. Each member was asked to make a commitment to a two year or a three year term.  Fourteen members currently serve on the council.

The Work of the Council

The first task of the newly formed St. Bede Parish Pastoral Council was to listen to the parish.  To enable all voices to be heard, the council developed a St. Bede-specific survey.  The survey was launched in October 2009 at two parish assemblies.

Thirty-one percent of St. Bede households responded to the survey.  After each survey question was analyzed and more than 1,000 open ended responses summarized, the council met for an all day session with Dr. John Camillus, a parishioner and a Strategic Management professor from Pitt, to discuss and prioritize all that had been heard from the parish.

By using multiple forums, the council was able to listen to the concerns and suggestions of parishioners in both small, private discussions and broad, anonymous survey responses. The meetings and survey focused on 5 elements of parish life—Eucharist, Catechesis, Formation, Stewardship, and Evangelization–as outlined by Bishop Zubik in his pastoral letter, The Church Alive!

Parish Pastoral Plan: Keeping Saint Bede Vital and Strong

From this work, the Mission Statement and four areas for targeted development, known as the Key Result Areas, emerged to form the Parish Pastoral Plan. The Pastoral Plan was approved by Fr. Bryce and presented to the parish on the Feast of the Pentecost in 2010.  See the link for the St. Bede Parish Pastoral Plan on this website.

Committees have been formed and coordinators identified to lead these efforts.  To learn how to get involved, please contact the coordinators for each area:
